If you are planning to visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, you might be all excited about the Kilimanjaro Safaris and the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. But do you know that there are numerous animals scattered all over the park waiting to be discovered? From tiny naked mole rats to giant southern anteaters, here are five amazing animals you should keep an eye out for during your next visit:
1. Kangaroos
When you think of kangaroos, Australia might be the first place that comes to mind. But did you know that Disney’s Animal Kingdom is home to two species of kangaroos, including the four western grey and two red? You can spot them on your way to the Tree of Life photo area. Turn left at the entrance, and you’ll see them to your right. The red kangaroos have a distinct white stripe on their face.
2. American Crocodile
Besides the dinosaurs, you can also spot the American crocodile in DinoLand. Head over to the waterside to find Marley, the crocodile, regulating his body temperature throughout the day. How can you distinguish between an alligator and an American crocodile? Take a close look at their snouts! American crocodiles have a long, narrow snout, while alligators have a wider, U-shaped snout.
3. Naked Mole Rats
One of the tiniest animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom resides at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. You can spot the pink, naked mole rats in the research center. Don’t let their name fool you – they are covered in fine hair that is sensory and helps them navigate through their dark, underground tunnels.
4. Southern Giant Anteaters
Before visiting Discovery Island, spend some time at the Oasis at the entrance, one of the favourite spots for unique animals like the southern giant anteater. These fascinating creatures are equipped with a cylindrical snout that gives them an excellent sense of smell that can be up to 40 times stronger than humans. Since their eyesight is not so great, they rely heavily on their sense of smell.
5. Animals at Rafiki’s Planet Watch
If you want to take a break from the crowds and experience something unique, head to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Take a train ride to this section of the park, where you can find some of the most amazing animals. Indulge in some of the favourites at the Affection Section, where you can say hi to Nigerian dwarf goats and kunekune pigs. Explore the Conservation Station, where you can spot reptiles like the Florida-native gopher tortoise, the desert rosy boa, and the colourful splash-backed poison frog. You may even catch the animal health team performing their duties through an observation window at the state-of-the-art veterinary hospital.
Bonus: Paroon Shark Catfish
If you have some extra time, go and see Bruce, the paroon shark catfish, at the Tree of Life Garden. These interesting creatures usually stay in deeper water and can grow up to ten feet long!
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park is full of surprises that go beyond Kilimanjaro Safaris. With all these fantastic animals to spot, make sure to explore the nooks and crannies of the park to discover these incredible creatures.
