Dr. Zak: A Passionate Scientist Leading Disney Wildlife Conservation Programs

Dr. Zak, a conservation manager at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, not only leads scientific programs that focus on conserving biodiversity within the park but also beyond its boundaries. Together with a dedicated team of scientists and researchers from Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment, Dr. Zak has successfully expanded conservation efforts. Consequently, they have implemented various initiatives such as habitat protection, grants, rescue and rehabilitation, and community outreach, to name a few.

Terrestrial Conservation and Pollinator Protection

As the head of terrestrial conservation programs, Dr. Zak is responsible for protecting plants and their pollinators, including bees, birds, and butterflies. His work as an ecologist and evolutionary biologist involves studying conservation, ecosystems, and pollination at Walt Disney World Resort.

Inspiring Future Scientists and Conservation Experts

Dr. Zak is passionate about inspiring the next generation of scientists and conservation experts. His own interest in animals began at a young age and continued through his studies in college. He has traveled to Costa Rica, Greenland, and Kenya to study global conservation efforts.

Walt Disney’s Enduring Commitment to Conservation

Disney’s dedication to conservation is not new. Fifty years ago, Walt Disney purchased land in Florida. He set aside a third of it for animal and environmental conservation. Dr. Zak continues this legacy, working to protect over 1,000 species. He also contributes to stewardship efforts for Disney properties worldwide.

Conservation in Disney Films and Beyond

Walt Disney’s dedication to wildlife and the environment is evident in the films he created, with half of his twenty-three Academy Awards being for nature films. Nature continues to inspire Disney movies, like “Moana,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and “The Lion King.”

Global Conservation Efforts and Disney Planet Possible

Dr. Zak plans to study animals, insects, and their environments worldwide for the rest of his life, hoping to visit Indonesia, Congo, or tropical forests in Asia or Africa next. He believes conservation is about a global community working together to care for the planet. Disney’s company-wide commitment to changing our planet’s story is called Disney Planet Possible.
