Colombia: The Destination That Inspired Disney’s “Encanto”
If you loved the Academy Award-winning film “Encanto,” you’re going to want to pack your bags and set off on an unforgettable trip to Colombia. This colorful country inspired the story, world, and characters of this magical film.
On the Adventures by Disney Colombia trip, we’ll have similar experiences to the Madrigals. We’ll make arepas, eat delicious meals and play tejo. We’ll also tour a Colombian coffee farm in the Coffee Region, drink coffee, and learn how to brew a perfect cup. Thrill-seekers can snorkel among the Rosario Islands, home to more than 1,300 species of marine animals, vibrantly colored fish, and plants.
Discover What Inspired “Encanto”
In spring 2018, filmmakers Byron Howard and Jared Bush traveled to Colombia. Their quest aimed to find inspiration for the story, world, and characters in their new film. This film would eventually become “Encanto.” They visited the Cocora Valley and saw the towering wax palm trees and butterflies. The duo sought Colombian cuisines like arepas and tejo as they walked through Cartagena’s streets, admiring colorful architecture and fabrics. Colombia’s rich biodiversity inspired Antonio’s magical ability in “Encanto” to communicate with animals.
“Every Disney Animation film begins with research, and the trip we took to Colombia as we were developing ‘Encanto’ with Lin-Manuel Miranda immediately brought the story of this magical place and our wondrous Madrigal family to life,” said Howard and Bush.
Exclusive “Encanto” Visual Development Artwork
For families on the inaugural Colombia season, each travel party booked during the trip will receive a signed lithograph. Collaborating with Walt Disney Animation Studios, Adventures by Disney released exclusive “Encanto” visual development artwork as a signed lithograph and an immediate digital download.
